“if you can’t stand on one leg for 10 seconds, be concerned” This was the headline of an article published in The Australian in June 23, 2022. The article started by stating that if you’re over 50 and you WOBBLE after 10 sec or less standing on one leg then you’ve got a poor prognosis for health. They cited a BJSM article stating that if you can’t stand on one foot for 10 seconds within 3 attempts, you’re at almost twice the risk of dying in 10 years. 

On the flip side, if you can stand on one leg with your eyes closed for 10 seconds, you’re likely to be well in 13 years’ time. 

Poor balance is linked to health conditions such as inner ear infections, hearing loss, Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s, stroke, small blood vessel damage, reduced cognitive function and dementia. Generally, people in poor health tend to have poor balance, and decline in balance over time, while normal, can point to how maintaining regular exercise, particularly strength work, can benefit our well being in our later years.
What's life like for a Stroke survivor?
The short and realistic answer for many is, not the same as pre-stroke.
That doesn't mean there is now hope or you can't work on improving your capacity to do the things you enjoy. With lots of rehabilitation work and support from friends and family, Mary still enjoys attending local functions and even going on some international trips. You can see her here visiting China in 2017, 2 years after her stroke.

There is a belief that exists that once you reach 12 months post stroke you will not get any further improvement in function.

This is simply not true. How much function you will regain is a very complex question that needs to be worked on by you and your care team consistently.

Here Mary went from not being able to get out of bed in 2015 to walking a few steps unaided in 2018. She continues to this day to receive regular physiotherapy with Transcend Health to continue to build strength and function.
