Meet Dan! He’s a face you are sure to see at Transcend Health, and around Newy! Dan loves to surf, run, slack line, skate, handstand, and hike. In fact we can’t think of a type of activity Dan doesn’t like!!

 

Super active, enthusiastic, good-natured, and an all round top bloke. Dan lets us in on why he loves Transcend Health.

 

Q: Hey Dan, when did you first rock up at Transcend Health, and why?

A: Early 2016 when it was first held in the park. I started because I always had a sore back and it was stopping me from surfing

 

Q: Did you have a movement goal for 2017? What can you do now that you couldn’t do a year ago?

A: Yes to be able to hold a handstand. Now I’m holding it and starting to make different shapes!

 

Q: Why do you recommend so many people to Transcend Health?

A: Because its fun! I am stronger now than I ever have been, and I am able to do all the activities that I love to do!

 

Q: What is something that you’ve learnt about Duncan that no one else knows?

A: That deep down… deep, deep down… he’s a very caring, and loving person.

 

Sounds to us like Transcend Health brought Dan a great bro-mance with Duncan, and huge results in movement and health.

Meet our Member – Ange

Meet our Member – Angharad Carter

What brought you to Transcend Health, and what do you like about it?

I’ve been interested in functional movement for a while, with an idea that increasing mobility and strength in a full range of movement will improve my chronic musculoskeletal pain. I heard about Transcend Health and it sounded like a good fit for what I was after.

 

What is your movement goal this year?

Hang for 30 seconds

 

What advice would you give to people who want to start movement, but think they won’t be good enough?

Everyone should start movement and work to their ability, and accept themselves for where they start at, don’t try to push too hard and injure themselves. They’ll find (like I have) that they gradually improve with time, and be amazed what they can build up to, and how far they’ve come.

 

What is your personal philosophy about health and well being?

My philosophy for health and wellbeing is to be natural as possible. Natural (functional) movement, cook fresh food, spend quality time with family/friends. All pretty basic stuff but so important.

Meet our Member – Dale

Meet our Member – Dale

Dale /‘daIl/. Noun.

Outgoing member of Transcend Health. Born and bred in Bulahdelah, New South Wales. Known for his love of football, deep squats, and a Friday afternoon beer. Can be spotted at six in the morning at Transcend Health, doing Shavasana, or having “chat” about the latest Jets game.

It’s no secret that Dale Sumner, is part of Transcends foundation. He attends every class on offer, and is always up for a laugh.

Dale has answered some questions below to give others a snap shot into why he loves (and almost lives) at Transcend Health.

Q: What brought you to Transcend Health, and what has made you stay?

A: It was coming into finals time last year and I had hardly played any football for the (mighty) Cooks Hill soccer team, because of a long-term injury I had picked up early in the season. Duncan came to one of our games to help us out with any injuries, and he showed me some stretches that helped get me back playing… my Transcend journey grew from there.

It didn’t take long for me to realise that my body needed more than a few physio sessions to get where I wanted it to be, and Transcends holistic view of health and functional movement was a match for me.

Q: Why would you encourage others to join as a member?

A: Outside of the obvious benefits to your health I would say the people. Transcend is one big positive community, the support network, banter, and accountability to your trainer and fellow members is what makes the early mornings, and after work sessions a highlight of my day. We train together but also socialise together, and through Transcend I have met many people I now consider my good friends.

Q: What changes have you noticed in your body since training at Transcend Health?

A: Apart from my newly acquired sculpted guns and chiselled abs, the largest changes have been in the way I sit, and stand which has greatly reduced my back pain. I drive a lot for work, and it’s a relief back pain is no longer a huge fear for me. Daily life is easier.

Meet our Member – Chris

Meet our Member – Chris

The Transcend Journey started in July 2016 for Chris. He was told nothing more could be done for his knee after his 7th operation, and regular physiotherapy. Chris had heard of Jacci’s passion in the field of injury management, and he wasn’t disappointed with his results.

When asked about the change he’s noticed in his knee Chris said “I wasn’t able to be on my feet for very long, nor could I do basic exercises without crippling pain… [since seeing Jacci] my pain has gone from high to barely noticeable… I was told I would never run again, but with the guidance and exercises, I have been able to run for the first time in 12 years… Most of all, besides the physical benefits, by coming to Transcend I have found a strong feeling of self-worth”.

Chris has recommended Transcend to people because of two key things. One; the entire team value and care about you, not just as a client but as a person. Two; the classes allow you to improve fitness in a safe, and fun environment.

The whole team at Transcend Health would like to acknowledge Chris for his big part in our community. Chris is known for baking incredible birthday cakes, organising hikes for our members, and regularly sending encouraging messages to our clinicians.

If you haven’t met Chris, definitely get chatting to him. Chris has a passion for photography, in particular capturing photos of animals. Chris is often seen with a camera in hand and if you check out his Instagram you’ll be very impressed.

Meet Our Member – Leslie

Meet Our Member – Leslie Hopping

One day Leslie walked in to Transcend Health and since that moment her life hasn’t been the same.

Leslie locked eyes with our Exercise Physiologist, Jacci, and knew she’d met “the one”.

Leslie told Jacci she had put on 5kg every year for that past five years, and was particularly disheartened when she had attempted rigorous boot camp three times a week, and still put on weight. Leslie also had ongoing calf, and hip problems.

The first thing Jacci told her to do, was stop, and re-evaluate her approach to weight loss. Jacci outlined a plan, and together they executed it perfectly. The result? Phenomenal!
Leslie has lost 5kg since seeing Jacci, her calf and hip pain was abolished, and Leslie is now attending Yoga, and Age-ility classes at Transcend Health!

Meet our Member – Kate Flint

Q:          Hi Kate, what made you join Transcend Health as a member?

A:           I came to Transcend because of my friend, Dan Daley referring me. We were talking about our injuries, and he suggested I try it. I’d tried so many things, and I still wasn’t back running so I thought, “Why not?”

Q:          What do you like most about our group exercise classes?

A:           I like that the classes are small, that everyone is positive. There are exercise options for everyone. It’s not competitive, it’s nurturing and it’s Fun!

Q:          What improvements have you noticed in your body since joining Transcend Health?

A:           My push up technique specifically has gotten better, and I feel very positive mentally.

Q:          Why would you recommend Transcend Health to your friends?

A:           For all of the reasons above. It’s fun, nurturing and it seems to be working for me! I suppose I don’t want to tell too many people because I like the small groups!!

Meet Our Member – Jan

Meet our Member – Jan Cleary

Drop in to Transcend Health and you’re likely to run into Jan. Jan attends our Age-ility Class every week, known for winding Duncan up and making the group howl with laughter. Lets get to know Jan.

 

Q: Hi Jan, what’s two of the best things about Transcend Health?

A: I have had much better movement since coming to Transcend, physically I’ve noticed my mobility has improved. On a personal note, I love coming here because I feel comfortable in the space, welcome, and accepted.

Q: That’s really nice to hear, and exactly the environment we want to create. Can you think of a skill or movement you are able to do now that you couldn’t do before?

A: It might not be the answer you expect, but with my disability I wasn’t able to easily stand up before coming here. I had to use my hands a lot. Now I can stand up using only my leg power.

Q: So an increase in your physical strength that has led to better movement with every day life activities. Can you tell us, on a personal level with your disability, what significance does Transcend Health make to you.

A: I really do feel normal when I come here. I have a great connection with Duncan, and the team at Transcend, I feel every exercise can be adjusted for me, and I’m always included. The hardest part is taking the chair-lift up those stairs because that makes me  ‘stand out’ , but once I’m in the class I just love it.

Q: We are really glad you feel that way. If you were to encourage other people to try the Age-ility class, what would you say to them?

A: Trust yourself, and give it a try.

Meet Our Member – Bridget

Bridget has been a member of Transcend Health since July 2016. We think she’s amazing, so here’s a snap shot of how she Moves Beyond Mediocrity

Q: Hey Brig, tell me about the best thing that’s happened to you, since joining Transcend Health?

B: For me, the biggest change has been facing my fears and building more self confidence. Before joining I would never have attempted a muscle up (because that’s a ‘boy’ exercise) or a back bend. Now I’m willing to give anything a try. Q: That’s awesome and we have noticed that personal growth too! What sort of physical changes have you experienced?

B: This time last year I was 15 kilograms heavier! I have a lot more energy now, and I’m more confident with my body.

Q: Congratulations that’s such a huge deal! Can you tell us, what’s your favourite new movement skill, and what’s your favourite class?

B: Duncan’s Move Beyond Mediocrity is my favourite class. I can now touch my whole palm to the ground when I bend forward! I used to not be able to touch my toes. And I can do a ‘wheel’ or ‘back bend’ now.

Q: That’s so good! Brig, you are attending heaps of classes, what’s something you love about coming here?

B: The community. Everyone is so nice!Brig 2
